This scene emerges as an attempt to create a space to breathe, where I began searching for momentary salvation from the density and weight of the subjects. It is not always necessary to look through a single optimistic lens; rather, there is a need to contemplate pain and acknowledge sorrow as momentary states only for the present, not the future. Perhaps they are dualities oscillating between reaching stability and burning.

Seeking salvation is embodied in that bright sun, which we strive towards to liberate us from current grief. On my way to it, the little girl reaching the sun manifests; she is you and us, children walking towards the light. It is the image of the child, the mother, and the deer, on a path reaching a point that reproduces itself in its broader form. What exists inside the sun is the very path I walk, repeating within every sun.

In this work, I depict the scene of the child (composed of the mother and the deer) trying to reach the sun. The wall appears to enclose what is behind it, yet it does not block the sun. On the parallel side, paper kites appear, caught in the nets above the gates built to separate us.

Here, time becomes intangible, and space is the arrival at the sun. Inside the sun lies the exact same scene the child and what surrounds them in an unbroken loop that continues to cycle in a limitless world.

This exhibition considers use-cases in which the archive of the Khalil Sakakini Cultural Centre becomes a way into broader questions of memory. The projects on display propose forms of collaboration, interaction, or refusal across temporalities.

Experiments in Archival Commons

Throughout 2025, the Khalil Sakakini Cultural Centre undertook an archiving project meant to preserve its holdings and make them accessible. The Centre has acted as a backdrop to many pivotal moments in contemporary Palestinian cultural history, and so the thinking behind this work was that the materials it held, as sources of knowledge that can seed continuities, are better held in common than left dormant on the Centre’s shelves and hard drives.

What began as a project to “preserve” and “make accessible” turned into a direct confrontation with the contradictions and unstated implications of those two aims. Within broader questions around common spaces and shared memory, the archive emerges as a site carrying generative and destructive capacities at once. We’ve been considering how memory systems operate, as multiple temporalities enter into tension over their own claims to authority; how permanence is asserted, or undone; how the prospect of erasure forcefully reshapes the archival logics of the oppressed, as anxieties and aspirations are projected onto formalised structures of remembrance.

We’ve wondered how agency is allowed to circulate within archival structures, through decisions of appearance and disappearance; through apprehensions to being revealed; and through the cracks that can be chosen to make oneself invisible; how materials are handed over, made absent, re-appropriated, or allowed to persist without resolution, as “past” and “present” search for provisional terms of collaboration.

This exhibition brings together newly produced works and others returning from the Centre’s history, which share a concern with how memory is formed, shared, and contested. Taken together, they consider use-cases in which the archive of the Khalil Sakakini Cultural Centre becomes a way into broader questions of memory. All of the projects on display propose forms of collaboration, interaction, or refusal across temporalities, asking what awareness can do: an awareness of our position in time, of our role in the conflicts embedded in the archive’s making, sharing, and reading, and of our presence as agents within these structures.
